CISX gears up to seek more international business

Investment strategies and post-crisis global positioning will be the focus of the Channel Islands Stock Exchange’s second International Business Summit, which is scheduled to take place on September 10 at the Hotel de France in St Helier, Jersey.

Speakers at the event will include Angela Knight, chief executive of the British Bankers’ Association, Paul Mortimer Lee, global head of market economics at BNP Paribas, Colin Powell, chairman of the Offshore Group of Banking Supervisors and advisor on international affairs for the States of Jersey, and economist and author Roger Bootle.

According to CISX chief executive Tamara Menteshvili, the conference aims to “create opportunities for the islands’ financial services business, while positioning the Channel Islands as international finance centres of the highest standard”.

Menteshvili says the question of future positioning is particularly relevant to the Channel Islands in light of the impending EU Directive on Alternative Investment Fund Managers.

“We are living in unprecedented times, and we will examine the challenges of change and change management,” she says. “During the course of the day we’ll be looking at managing risk, the post-crisis regulatory landscape, where we’re going.

“Expert speakers will be discussing business activities linked to our market such as structured funds and alternative investments, and considering where are the engines for global growth.”

Alhough the conference is based in the Channel Islands, the outlook and subject matter is global, says Gavin Farrell of offshore law firm Ozannes, a chief sponsor of last year’s summit.

“Last year’s conference was an opportunity for international speakers and delegates to see the quality of the CISX and generally of service providers based within the Channel Islands,” Farrell says.

“The focus of current affairs discussed was truly international and not centred solely on the Channel Islands,” says Farrell. “It was a credit to both the CISX and the Channel Islands that the conference attracted such a high calibre of attendees.”

Sponsors and delegates are now being sought for the event, which was unveiled in St Helier and St Peter Port last week. Organisers say last year’s summit attracted more than 230 delegates, half of whom were domiciled outside the Channel Islands, but more are expected at this year’s event.
