Mailcloud raises USD2.8m to build real time email & messaging for teams

Mailcloud has successfully completed a seed funding round led by enture capital investors Octopus Investments, with Bessemer Venture partners, that takes total funding to USD2.8m.

The round also includes Xavier Niel’s Kima Ventures, an early backer of Square, Nest and other high profile startups. Seedcamp London have also invested from their new USD50m growth fund. The company has attracted a number of high profile angel backers including Barry Smith, co-Founder of Skyscanner, Irish tech entrepreneur Ray Nolan, Frederic Court, Partner at Advent Ventures and Daniel Malhery founder of Deezer.

Founded in November 2013, Mailcloud is a unique service where users connect their existing email account, organising their entire history of emails, files and content into folders sorted by person. Mailcloud empowers teams to communicate in real time with anyone, anywhere, across all their devices, in a highly personalised way. The aim is to put all your content and communication in one place, for the first time. The service is built in London by a passionate team of engineers from IBM, Vodafone, Cable & Wireless and Hewlett Packard whose mission is to ‘help the world work easier and faster’.

This latest USD2.5m funding round follows the USD1m commitment in January from founder Malcolm Bell’s investment company Dessinka. Mailcloud is a Microsoft Bizspark Plus company, hosting in Azure and using .Net. The service will go live in November on Android and iOS devices, written in Swift, Apple’s new programming language.

Malcolm Bell, founder and CEO at Mailcloud, says: “I started Mailcloud because I was really frustrated after receiving 145,000 emails in 2011. I spent so much time organising my own organisation I couldn’t get any real work done. Since I was kid, I always had a passion for technology and this was a problem I believed technology could solve.  After looking around at different apps and solutions, there wasn’t one that organised everything for me in one place. After speaking with some engineering friends, they felt the same. So, we decided to build a Mailcloud for ourselves and for everyone else. This latest funding will help us to really push forward the development of the service, we welcome Octopus and our new investors on board and look forward to working together to help teams work easier and faster.”

Alliott Cole from the ventures team at Octopus, says: “At Octopus we focus on identifying entrepreneurs and fast growth companies that can scale explosively to create, transform or dominate an industry and we believe Mailcloud will do just that within the communications industry. We are extremely proud and excited to be backing Malcolm and the team at Mailcloud alongside other high profile angel backers.”

Alex Ferrara from Bessemer Ventures, says: ‘Malcolm and the team at Mailcloud are addressing the single biggest challenge facing today's knowledge worker; information overload. Current approaches to personal and professional information management are unsustainable and social media has only made the problem worse. The problem is so great that if Mailcloud makes even a small dent in it, it could collectively save information workers billions of hours of time.
