STAR Capital acquires Globalways

STAR Capital has acquired a majority stake in Globalways, a Stuttgart-based IT services and infrastructure business.

The investment is the second made by the STAR III Fund, following the acquisition of Synergy Health Management Services in July 2016.

STAR, in partnership with the founders and management team of Globalways, will commit around EUR60 million of growth capital to build a regional data centre business in Germany.

The continued growth in internet usage is driving an increasing need for data storage, distribution and access requirements while demanding the latest standards in IT security. This is happening at the same time that existing data centre facilities situated in many economic centres across Germany are ageing and often at capacity.

The transaction will target regionally important cities, providing modern, highly secure and energy-efficient facilities, conveniently located for customers. A modular-build approach will allow facilities to be designed and delivered much more quickly than traditional large data centres.

The new data centres to be established throughout Germany will be operating under the brand Datacenter One.

Peer Knauer, entrepreneur and special adviser to STAR, has agreed to join the board as chairman and invest alongside STAR and management.

Uniti Bhalla, managing partner of STAR, says: “This transaction continues STAR’s successful track record of identifying capital-intensive businesses that have the potential to generate long-term and highly stable cash flows. We look forward to working with the team to significantly grow the infrastructure owned and operated by Globalways and are pleased to be able to continue our long history of investing in the German market with this differentiated strategy.”

Knauer says: “The Globalways management is highly experienced and has a proven record of strong performance in the data centre market. I am very excited to support the team in conjunction with STAR to expand the business across Germany.”

Markus Binder, founder of Globalways, says: “This exciting transaction enables us to establish a distributed infrastructure, pursuing our long-term vision of delivering exceptional hosting and IT services to nationwide business customers. This can now be achieved through unifying standardised data centre and fibre network platforms, and leveraging significant economies of scale.”
