The Rohatyn Group hires beyond-BRIC equity portfolio manager

The Rohatyn Group (TRG), a specialised asset management firm focused on emerging markets, has hired former Caravel Flagship Fund portfolio manager Beidi Gu, who will be based in New York and lead TRG’s public equity investment strategies in beyond-BRIC emerging and frontier markets.

TRG CEO Nick Rohatyn, says: “Beidi’s investment approach, which targets overlooked, underresearched markets and companies, aligns well with TRG’s emphasis on investment strategies that seek to capitalise on structural inefficiency and special opportunity. The robust growth fundamentals and strong potential to add alpha through fundamental analysis and active management make beyond-BRIC equities an exceptionally compelling investment opportunity. We are thrilled to add a capability in the space under the leadership of such a talented practitioner.”

Gu adds: “After more than seven wonderful years at Caravel investing alongside James Harmon, a true believer in emerging and frontier markets, I am excited to begin my next chapter at TRG together with Nick, himself a pioneer in the asset class. I believe TRG’s institutional infrastructure, global footprint and wide knowledge base across asset classes provide an ideal environment for the Emerging and Frontier Market equity strategy. The unique perspective and insights offered by TRG’s macro investment team – led by emerging market veterans Bernard Steinberg, Vincent Low and Guido Mosca – on dynamics in currencies, interest rates and politics, will further enrich my investment process.”

Gu has over 12 years of experience investing in emerging and frontier equity markets. Prior to TRG, she served as the Global Portfolio Manager for The Caravel Flagship Fund, a long only equity fund specialised in beyond BRIC emerging and frontier equities. Ms. Gu joined Caravel in January 2010, originally serving as the Director of Asia. Her experience also includes time as a research associate at WRA Investment, a Tiger Management global long/short fund, focusing on China and other Asia equities. She began her career as a research associate in Morgan Stanley’s Financial Institutions Team.

Also joining TRG from The Caravel Flagship Fund will be Hiep Nguyen. Nguyen, who has over seven years of sell-side and buy-side research experience, will serve as an equity analyst with a focus on Asia. He is based in Hanoi, Vietnam.
