Former NYSE Euronext chairman Hessels joins General Atlantic

Growth equity firm General Atlantic (GA) has appointed Jan-Michiel Hessels, former chairman of NYSE Euronext, as a special advisor in Europe based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Hessels (pictured) brings over 30 years of experience across many industries to the role, and will work closely with GA’s global investment team to identify new investment opportunities as well as provide strategic support for the firm’s portfolio companies.

Hessels currently serves on the board of directors at IntercontinentalExchange Group and on the supervisory board at Royal Boskalis Westminster. From 2000 to 2013, he served as chairman of the board of NYSE Euronext (formerly Euronext), where he helped lead the company’s merger with NYSE Group. He also has served as a director of several prominent firms including Heineken, Royal Philips Electronics, SC Johnson Europlant, Fortis and the Amsterdam Exchange.

Bill Ford, CEO of General Atlantic, says: “We have known Jan-Michiel for several years and are excited to welcome him to the GA team as a Special Advisor.  Jan-Michiel brings a breadth of expertise across a broad set of industries and has distinguished himself as a strategic advisor and board director to many important global businesses over his highly successful career.  He will play a valuable role advising our European investment team and our portfolio companies globally.”

Hessels says: “General Atlantic has built a superb reputation around the world as an investor whose strategic expertise has helped hundreds of companies navigate various stages of growth. I look forward to working with GA’s team as they identify new investment prospects and help current portfolio companies capitalise on their growth opportunities.”
