Private equity firm the Carlyle Group has named Ian Jackson as a director of Carlyle Strategic Partners, Carlyle’s global distressed and corporate opportunities group that invests in debt and equity of financially distressed companies.

He joins from Deutsche Bank, where he was a senior analyst in the European distressed products group, and is based in London.

Carlyle Strategic Partners leverages Carlyle’s buyout expertise and high yield capability and seeks to exert influence or obtain control in its investments when possible and appropriate. It invests in the secondary trading markets as well as on a structured and private equity basis.

Brett Wyard, managing director and a co-head of Carlyle Strategic Partners, says: "Ian’s experience and track record in identifying distressed opportunities in Europe and the numerous contacts he has developed over the last decade will prove a major advantage as we deploy our latest USD1.35bn fund, Carlyle Strategic Partners II."

Raymond Whiteman, also a managing director and co-head of Carlyle Strategic Partners, adds: "We are delighted to welcome Ian to the team. The current economic environment will create many attractive opportunities in Europe and Ian’s local presence will enable us to significantly enhance our pipeline of potential investments.’

At Deutsche Bank, Jackson invested across the capital structure from senior secured debt to equity, liquidations, refinancings, private equity and special situations. He previously spent five years working for Deutsche Bank’s Japanese distressed products group in Tokyo acquiring non-performing loan portfolios and trading yen-denominated corporate bonds for US and European clients.

Jackson says: "I welcome this opportunity to help grow Carlyle’s distressed investment activities in Europe. The team has a fantastic track record with award-winning investments such as that in Stellex Aerostructures. The conditions are right for building on that record with some excellent investments in Europe."
