Bessemer Venture Partners, a global investment group, has announced two promotions to vice president: Stephen Kraus in the healthcare practice based in Massachusetts, and Subramanya S.V. in the Mumbai-based India practice.

Kraus joined BVP full-time in 2008, but has been involved with the firm’s healthcare investments since 2004.

He brings experience at the Ironwood Equity Fund, a growth-stage private equity operation, and Bain & Company.

Working with Christopher Gabrieli in the healthcare practice, he has been actively involved with BVP’s investments in Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, acquired by GlaxoSmithKline, Affymax, Oxagen, Aveo Pharmaceuticals, Acceleron, Transave, Cerulean Pharmaceuticals, and Stromedix.

He served on the board of Restore Medical until its acquisition by Medtronic in July 2008, and currently sits on the board of Transave.

BVP began its healthcare practice in the mid-1980s and has backed Isis Pharmaceuticals, EPIX Pharmaceuticals, VistaCare and IPC The Hospitalist Company.

S.V. joined BVP India in 2007 as an associate, coming from Avendus Advisors and KPMG. He has been closely involved with BVP India’s investments in Deccan Chronicle, Tulip Telecom, and Riddhi Siddhi Gluco Biols.

Bessemer initiated its India practice in 2003 and has invested in more than 20 Indian companies. Among its portfolio companies to list on public markets are Motilal Oswal, Shriram EPC and OnMobile Global.

J. Edmund Colloton, BVP’s chief operating officer, says: ‘The promotions of Steve and Subu recognize the stellar work that these two gentlemen have done, Steve with our healthcare portfolio and Subu with our India investments. The partnership is confident that they will continue to provide our portfolio companies with invaluable assistance in these challenging times.’

The appointments follow the promotion of Vishal Gupta to director of the Mumbai-based BVP India investment team. Gupta now becomes a member of the partnership with responsibility for managing the team’s operations as well as making investments.
