Kempen European Private Equity Fund holds second closing at EUR120m

The private equity fund of Kempen Capital Management (Kempen), the Kempen European Private Equity Fund, has raised over EUR45 million at second closing taking the total fund size to date to more than EUR120 million.

The group of investors in the fund predominantly consists of (former) entrepreneurs, experienced private equity investors, and captains of industry. They come from the Netherlands, Belgium, and Switzerland.

Sven Smeets, Co-head Private Markets, says: ‘This group of investors contributes to the broadening of the investment network in our home market. In addition, Van Lanschot Kempen staff invests in the fund with their own private capital as well. This “eat your own cooking” principle contributes to a proper alignment between our own interests and those of our investors, which is something we deeply believe in.’

The Kempen European Private Equity Fund is a closed-end investment fund with a minimum term of ten years. The fund focuses primarily on the small and lower mid-market private equity segment of the European buy-out private equity market. The strategy aims for private equity investments in stable small and medium-sized businesses that are market leaders in their own specific niche. Family businesses with a long history and an understandable business model serve as ideal examples. The fund applies a long-term horizon, forging alliances with investment partners in several European regions.

Marvin de Jong, Director of Private Markets, explained: ‘In the past few months, we have made several direct investments, and in addition, we have announced partnerships with local European investment partners. The portfolio of the Kempen European Private Equity Fund will be built up gradually but surely over a time period of three to five years. A third closing is expected in September. If, by that time, the fund has reached its target size of EUR150 to EUR200 million, this third closing will be the final closing.’
