Hughes Hubbard adds Partner to Latin America practice

Hughes Hubbard & Reed has added Carlos Lobo as a partner, effective 1 January, in the firm’s Latin America group based in New York. Lobo’s practice focuses on mergers and acquisitions (M&A), private equity investments and capital markets. He has 25 years of experience representing clients in complex M&A transactions, tender offers, private equity investments and fund formation. He also advises issuers and underwriters in IPOs, follow-ons, issuance of debt instruments in the international capital markets.

“Carlos has an impressive record handling large and complex cross-border transactions, involving private and public companies and private equity funds, and his significant experience will be a great addition to our firm and the clients we serve,” says Ted Mayer, chair of Hughes Hubbard. “We are excited to welcome him.”

Lobo represents companies across several industries including energy, infrastructure, telecom, technology, oil & gas, mining, agribusiness, real estate, retail, and financial services. He has been advising international clients investing in Latin America and multinational Latin-American companies in investments in the United States, Europe and Africa.

“I am delighted and honoured to join such a reputable firm such as Hughes Hubbard and look forward to collaborating with the firm’s internationally renowned lawyers,” says Lobo. “In addition to helping clients pursue strategic matters, I also look forward to advising on cross-border transactions and providing guidance with my knowledge of local markets and Brazilian law, while further developing a leading M&A and private equity Latin American practice. I am also confident my clients will benefit greatly from the firm’s outstanding capabilities in the US and the Latin America region.”

Lobo’s arrival further advances Hughes Hubbard’s strategic expansion of its practice in Latin America. He joins from the Rio de Janeiro office of Veirano Advogados, a Brazilian law firm. Four years ago, Hughes Hubbard bolstered its ability to serve clients with needs in Brazil through a strategic cooperation with Saud Advogados, a Brazilian law firm based in Rio, which further expanded the firm’s top-tier investigations practice in the region.

“Carlos will be a great addition to the team. Given the environment in Brazil and the recognised strength of our investigations practice in Brazil and Latin America generally, we are very excited to count on the breadth of his experience,” says Salim Saud Neto, partner at Saud Advogados.

Lobo holds a Master of Laws degree in Corporate Law from Columbia Law School and a Bachelor of Laws from Rio de Janeiro State University. He is also a member of the Brazilian Private Equity Association, the Latin American Private Equity Association, the Brazilian Institute of Business Law, and a member of the M&A Committee in the International Bar Association. He is fluent in English, Portuguese and Spanish.
