UK-based start-ups raised USD19.6bn VC funding between January and August

The UK is the key European market for venture capital (VC) investments, as the UK-based startups raised the highest VC funding amount during January-August 2021.

A total of 1,256 VC funding deals were announced in the UK during January-August 2021, while the disclosed funding value of these deals stood at USD19.6 billion, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Deal activity in 2021 so far has remained inconsistent in the UK. After three straight months of growth in VC deal value until July, August reversed the trend. August also marks the second consecutive month of decline in deal volume.

Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, says: “The UK is among the top five markets globally in terms of VC funding activity and is the biggest market in Europe.

“Despite the fluctuating trend, the UK held the highest share of European VC funding activity and accounted for around one-third of the region’s total deal volume and value during January-August 2021.”

Some of the notable VC funding deals announced during January-August 2021 in the UK included USD800 million funding raised by Revolut, USD600 million raised by CMR Surgical, USD450 million raised by Hopin and around USD450 million funding raised by Checkout, among others.
