PEW US Awards 2020

Private debt strategies continue to gain investor traction, as institutional allocators look to increasingly esoteric ‘alternative’ fixed income-style products, Private Equity Wire’s Clara Dijkstra outlines in a piece based on interviews with global and boutique investment consultancies.

The article shows that the general drive towards alternatives in the last few years has particularly benefited the private debt space, with a range of strategies – including regulatory capital relief, direct lending and distressed credit – proving popular.

In the VC space, we’ve already surpassed the EUR45.1 billion that was invested into European-based startups in 2020 – with only half the year gone VC deal value is currently standing at a whopping EUR47.1 billion, according to Pitchbook’s Q2 VC report, released this week.

“The pace set in Q1 was relatively strong, and then that increased to another record amount of capital in Q2,” Nalin Patel, author of Pitchbook’s report, told Private Equity Wire. Patel doesn’t believe this will slow down anytime soon. In fact, Pitchbook predicts European VC funding could hit the EUR 100 billion mark by the end of this year.

Meanwhile, a new global study has found that 70 per cent of private equity firms plan to invest in Latin America in the next five years – ahead of Asia Pacific – while over nine out of ten North American-based GPs are set to commit capital to the region by 2026.

According to the paper ‘Recovery to Rediscovery: Capitalizing on a Changed Private Equity Landscape’, commissioned by Auxadi, 90 per cent of US-based private equity firms said they are interested in doing deals in LatAm. Read our in-depth interview with Auxadi’s management team to find out more about investments into Latin America.

In a guest feature by EY’s Thomas Holm Moller and Laura McGarrity, they point to how ambitious PE firms should consider the currently under-explored route of partnering with start-ups to stoke digital transformation.

And last but not least, voting is now open for the Private Equity Wire US Awards 2021, which will be celebrated at an exclusive industry networking event at The University Club of New York on 20 October 2021.
