Albion Ventures makes first wind investment

Albion Ventures has invested GBP1.5million in partnership with Welsh based developer, Infinite Energy, to fund the development of a single 500kWp Wind Turbine on a brownfield site near Ebbw Vale in Wales.

The investment will create a special purpose vehicle (SPV) which will be owned by Albion Ventures’ funds and Infinite Energy. The site in Wales will benefit from the Feed-in-Tariff regime and is expecting to generate its first electricity in January 2012.  The installation is expected to create enough clean energy to power 325 households.  Under agreement, most of the energy will be used onsite by a tile manufacturer, offsetting up to 740,000 kilograms of CO2 per year.

This investment is Albion’s sixth investment into the environmental sector and continues Albion’s strategy of expanding into this sector.  In the last 12 months, Albion has made two Solar PV investments and an investment in a waste to energy Anaerobic Digestion plant in the Scotland.

Michael Kaplan, Partner at Albion, says: “Using finance from our VCT funds, Albion is continuing to grow its allocation in the renewable energy sector. We expect this investment to provide a strong, stable source of income for our funds for many years, with the possibility of significant gain when we eventually sell the investment. This investment highlights Albion’s commitment to a long term investment strategy, providing our funds with sustainable yields over the long term.”

Will David, Partner at Infinite Energy, says: “Albion Ventures has a clear understanding of the renewables sector.  Their investment in this project is a huge boost to realising our goal of providing green, low cost energy to business sites and we look forward to developing this, as well as future wind projects, in partnership with Albion.”

Garrad Hassan, the UK’s leading wind consultancy, is acting as a consultant to the project. The wind turbine for the site will be provided by Powerwind and the tile manufacturer is Redlands Monier.
