Carlyle Group seeks to boost investment in south-east Asia

Global private equity firm the Carlyle Group has appointed Anand Balasubrahmanyan as a director to lead its investments in south-east Asia for Carlyle Asia Partners.

Global private equity firm the Carlyle Group has appointed Anand Balasubrahmanyan as a director to lead its investments in south-east Asia for Carlyle Asia Partners. He will be based in Singapore, where he will set up a Carlyle Asia Partners team.

Established in 1997, Carlyle Asia Partners currently has USD2.56bn in dedicated funds under management. It makes control and strategic minority investments in companies across Asia outside Japan with a team of 33 investment professionals based in Hong Kong, Mumbai, Seoul, Shanghai, Sydney and now Singapore.

Balasubrahmanyan joins Carlyle after a 12-year career in investment banking, most recently as executive director and head of global capital markets for south-east Asia at Morgan Stanley.

‘We see increasing investment opportunities in south-east Asia,’ says X.D. Yang, managing director and co-head of Carlyle Asia Partners. ‘We are stepping up our efforts with a dedicated team based in Singapore under Anand’s leadership to pursue investments across the region, especially in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

‘Each of these countries has demonstrated strong economic growth and stability in recent years, and we expect such trends to continue. We will partner with local companies and management teams to grow their businesses in their own markets regionally and globally.’

The Carlyle Group is the largest private equity investor in Asia with USD6.3bn in committed funds under management and more than 100 investment professionals, making buyout, growth capital, real estate and leveraged finance investments in all the major economies in the region. Carlyle’s Singapore office in established in July 2000 by David Tung, a managing director responsible for investor relations in Asia.
