Santa Monica-based private equity firm Tennenbaum Capital Partners has appointed Marvin Barth, previously chief economist for international affairs at the US Treasury Department, as chief investment strategist.
At Treasury, Barth was the principal economic advisor to the under-secretary for international affairs and led the department’s monitoring and analysis of international asset markets, foreign exchange markets, and commodity markets, with a focus on risk assessment.
‘As chief investment strategist, Marvin will help us take full advantage of proprietary and public information already at our fingertips to identify attractive investment opportunities,’ says senior managing partner Michael E. Tennenbaum.
‘Marvin will bolster our ability to synthesise the flow of proprietary information from our portfolio companies, economic statistics from outside sources and capital market information from our trading desk to evaluate the opportunities and risks of potential investments.’
Before the Treasury Department, Barth was a global currency economist at Citigroup Global Markets in London, where he advised institutional investor, hedge fund and corporate clients on investment and hedging decisions in foreign exchange and fixed-income markets. Along with the head of currency research and chief currency strategist, he also managed a global research team that conducted research and originated Citigroup’s positions related to G-10 currency markets.
Between 1998 and 2003, Barth worked for the Federal Reserve board of governors, initially as an economist monitoring economic and political developments in South-East Asia and advising senior staff and governors about regional risks. From 1999 he shifted focus to global financial markets, tracking developments in worldwide financial markets and providing regular briefings to the Fed chairman and governors.
Tennenbaum Capital Partners manages some USD7bn in assets through private funds that invest in transitional middle-market companies in industries such as technology, health care, energy, aerospace, business services, retail, and general manufacturing.
The firm has core expertise in equity and debt financing vehicles in the public and private markets and in special situations such as legal, operational or financial challenges, turnarounds, restructurings and bankruptcies, corporate divestitures and buyouts, and complex ownership changes.
