EMPEA expands Asia presence

The Emerging Markets Private Equity Association (EMPEA) has opened a new office in Hong Kong and appointed Ruby Poon as its Asia Regional Manager to deepen its programs and relationships across the continent.

A global non-profit, membership-based organisation, EMPEA promotes private equity and venture capital investing in emerging economies to provide developing companies with access to value-added capital, and investors with access to superior returns.

Poon will build upon a strong EMPEA foundation in Asia, working closely with existing EMPEA members, developing new member relationships, and reinforcing ties to current and potential industry partners in the region. She will also liaise closely with EMPEA’s Asia Council, an advisory group formally launched last month.

Commenting on the announcement, EMPEA President and CEO Sarah Alexander says: “Emerging Asia continues to be of paramount interest to our 285 member firms across the globe, which represent more than USD900 billion in assets under management.  Given the unique nature of the private equity opportunities on the continent, we determined it was critical for EMPEA to have an on-the-ground presence to help members better understand the marketplace and future trends, whether or not they are yet actively investing in emerging Asia.”

In opening the EMPEA office, Poon builds on her work setting up the Hong Kong branch of the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), where she worked for two and a half years as a manager, promoting DIFC services to local communities. Prior to this, Poon worked for Servcorp, based in Hong Kong helping to set up a regional office in Chengdu. She is trilingual, speaking Cantonese, Mandarin and English, and earned an MBA at the University of San Francisco. “With her extensive experience and local knowledge, Ms. Poon is perfectly placed to represent EMPEA in these efforts,” says Alexander.
