According to the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association (EMPEA), which manages a global proprietary database of private equity activity across the emerging markets, 119 funds raised USD32.3 billion through 30 September, versus USD23.5 billion raised in all of 2010, returning emerging markets to pre-crisis fundraising levels.
Emerging Asia—led by China—continues to dominate the fundraising landscape with funds focused on these markets raising USD23.7 billion, capturing 73% of all capital raised through September and an increase of 167% on the USD14.2 billion raised for the region in all of 2010. Fundraising for Brazil reached a record USD4.5 billion, surpassing the 2008 peak of USD3.6 billion and a 400% increase over the prior year.
The pace of private equity dealmaking in emerging markets held steady through September, with 666 deals valued at USD21.5 billion, compared with 634 deals valued at USD20.8 billion during the same nine-month period a year prior.
