Alvarez & Marsal appoints ex-Apollo MD to lead India private credit build-out

Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) has named former Apollo Global Management executive Arpito Mukerji as Managing Director and Head of its newly launched private credit advisory platform in India, as the firm expands its presence in one of Asia’s fastest-growing alternative lending markets, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Mukerji brings over 30 years of experience in banking and corporate finance and will lead a team expected to scale to around 20 professionals, according to Nikhil Shah, who heads A&M’s financial advisory and special situations practice in India.

The move comes amid rising demand for private credit solutions across the region. India’s private credit market saw deal volume reach $9.2bn in 2024, a 7% increase year-on-year, driven by rising interest from institutional capital and limited partners seeking yield in an inflationary environment, according to EY data.

The new unit will focus on bespoke debt solutions including acquisition financing, PE exit facilitation, liability refinancing, and last-mile funding. Sector targets include real estate, metals and mining, healthcare, and industrials.

A&M has been a longstanding player in India’s restructuring and turnaround space, having advised on several high-profile processes under the country’s insolvency regime – most notably the resolution of Essar Steel.

The hire of Mukerji signals a strategic push into private capital advisory as global alternative asset managers and domestic NBFCs continue to scale deployment across India’s mid-market and special situations landscape.
