APG Asset Management responsible investment specialist to chair Invest Europe

Pension asset manager APG’s Senior Responsible Investment and Governance Specialist, Marta Jankovic, has been confirmed as the new Chair of Invest Europe, the association representing European private equity, venture capital and their global investors.

Last year, European private equity fundraising for investment into companies across Europe hit its highest level since 2008 last year at EUR74 billion, according to Invest Europe data released in May. Pension funds accounted for over a third of the capital raised.

Marta Jankovic succeeds Dr Gerry Murphy, Senior Managing Director and Chairman of Blackstone Europe, as Chair of the association and the role is effective immediately. Jankovic oversees the environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) integration within APG’s private equity investments, and also focuses on investment solutions that contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. She is a frequent conference speaker and commentator on alternative investments. As a member of Invest Europe’s Board of Directors and Limited Partners Council for investors, and former Chair of its Responsible Investment Roundtable, she has helped to promote ESG best practice across the industry.

“Invest Europe brings private equity fund managers and investors together to provide world class resources for the industry, including promoting transparency and best practice for responsible investment,” says Jankovic. “I want to highlight the important role private equity can have on the environment and society at large and look forward to helping to shape this key work. I thank Gerry Murphy for his excellent leadership over the last 12 months.”

Under Murphy’s tenure, Invest Europe launched a new pan-European private equity activity database, in partnership with national venture capital associations, to create the most reliable and comprehensive industry overview. Its ongoing work to raise the industry’s profile with key European policymakers included the announcement of new EU venture capital funding initiatives and the launch of Invest Week, a series of events for policymakers held for the first time in Brussels in 2016.

As Chair of Invest Europe, Jankovic will oversee the association’s work, including the development of the private equity data collection, as well as continued evolution of its Professional Standards Handbook. As the European Commission reviews the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD), the association will continue its public affairs work to ensure investors can continue to access the best managers, which is particularly relevant given the UK’s decision to leave the EU. Invest Europe will also deliver the second Invest Week, which aims to raise the profile of Europe as an investment destination and will focus on sustainability and responsible investment.

“This is the first time Invest Europe has had a major institutional investor as its Chair and demonstrates the association’s commitment to representing the whole industry,” says Michael Collins, Chief Executive of Invest Europe. “Marta’s contribution to Invest Europe’s work on professional standards, investor reporting guidelines and responsible investment is invaluable and we are delighted that she has agreed to step into the role of Chair for the coming year.”

Prior to joining APG in 2012, Jankovic was an in-house counsel at London private equity fund-of-funds SVG and practiced law in the funds team at King & Wood Mallesons.

Invest Europe’s membership is divided across four platforms representing different segments of the industry – venture capital, mid-market, large buy-out and limited partners (investors). Each platform is equally represented on Invest Europe’s Board of Directors, with the Chair selected from each platform in strict rotation. Jankovic was selected by the members in the limited partner platform and will represent all Invest Europe members.
