Apollo Global Management has appointed Eiji Ueda, former Chief Investment Officer of Japan’s Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF), as Partner and Head of its Asia-Pacific business, according to a report by Bloomberg. He resigned from the fund in March after five years as CIO.
Ueda succeeds Matt Michelini, who has led the region since 2022, overseeing a 76% rise in APAC staff since late 2021, excluding India. Michelini will remain in the region during a transition period before shifting to broader leadership roles within the firm next year.
Apollo has raised more than $10bn from regional institutions in the last 12 months alone.
At GPIF, Ueda oversaw major portfolio restructuring efforts, with a focus on foreign and domestic stocks. His background also includes nearly three decades at Goldman Sachs, where he held senior roles co-head of Asia securities, and leading fixed income, currency and commodities trading in Japan.
