Blackstone-backed Hipgnosis strikes Bieber deal

Hipgnoisis Song Management, a Blackstone-backed, UK investment firm focussed on music catalogues and royalties, has acquired the rights to Justice Bieber’s publishing and recorded music back-catalogue in a deal valued at around $200 million, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

The deal covers more than 290 titles released by the Canadian singer before the end of 2021. Accordiong to Hipgnosis, Universal Music Group will retain ownership of Bieber’s master recordings, or recorded music copyrights, in perpetuity.

Hipgnosis teamed with Blackstone in October 2021 to launch a $1 billion partnership to invest in songs, recorded music, music IP and royalties, and in 2022, acquired the song catalogue rights of Justin Timberlake in a deal valued at just over $100 million.
