The Blackstone Group has announced that it is opening a representative office in Beijing and has appointed Shan Fu, a former official with various economic bodies within the Chinese government, as its chief representative.

Fu joins Blackstone from Beijing Mainstreets Investment Group, where he was a vice-president. Previously he worked in China’s National Development and Reform Commission, the State Economic and Trade Commission, the Office of Economic and Trade within China’s State Council, and the State Council’s Office of Production.

‘The opening of our Beijing office and the appointment of Shan further underlines our deep commitment to China and the Chinese market,’ says Blackstone chairman and chief executive Stephen A. Schwarzman.

Antony Leung, Blackstone’s chairman for greater China, adds: ‘We see tremendous opportunities both in China and to partner with Chinese companies outside of China. The opening of our Beijing office and the appointment of Shan gives us another great resource to take advantage of those opportunities.’

Says Fu: ‘I am very excited about joining Blackstone as its chief representative in Beijing. I look forward to working with the Blackstone China team to channel the global reach and resources of Blackstone’s alternative asset and advisory platform and increase its presence in the China markets.’

The Blackstone Group’s businesses include the management of corporate private equity funds, real estate opportunity funds, funds of hedge funds, mezzanine funds, senior debt funds, proprietary hedge funds and closed-end mutual funds, as well as financial advisory services including mergers and acquisitions advisory, restructuring and reorganisation advisory and fund placement services.
