Calculus Capital sells stake in Human Race to Tour de France owner

Calculus Capital, a private equity fund manager and Enterprise Investment Scheme and VCT provider, has sold its investment in Human Race, a UK mass participation sports company, to Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO).

ASO is the company behind Le Tour de France, the Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris and many other European sports events.

Human Race organises more than 30 mass participation events in the UK, including the London Winter Run, Windsor Triathlon and the new VitalityMove events run in partnership with Olympic champion Jessica Ennis-Hill.

More than one million participants have taken part in events organised by one of the two companies.

Calculus Capital invested in Human Race in April 2012, following an investment two years earlier by Epsilon Partners. Deal terms are not being disclosed, but this is a profitable exit for Calculus Capital’s investors.

Nick Rusling, CEO of Human Race, says: “We developed from nothing 26 years ago and the relatively recent investment by Calculus Capital allowed us to accelerate our growth to the point where we now deliver more than 30 events annually and have seen our 300,000th customer cross a finish line. To be able to continue this journey with ASO is incredibly exciting as we know them well from our collaborations over the past two years on the Tour de Yorkshire and L’Etape London.”

Robert Davis, deputy CEO of Calculus Capital, says: “During the four years since our investment, Human Race has successfully delivered on its strategy of building entrant numbers at existing events and developing new ones, establishing itself as the largest and most diverse mass participation sports company in the UK. We look forward to watching the new merged business build on this success.”
