CGE weighs £1bn Aurora Energy sale, sources say

Private equity firm CGE Partners is reviewing strategic options for Aurora Energy Research, including a potential sale that could value the energy data and analytics business at up to £1bn ($1.3bn), according to a Bloomberg report citing sources familiar with the matter.

The London-based investor is said to be working with a financial adviser on the prospective divestment. Sources noted that discussions remain at an early stage and may not result in a transaction.

Aurora, acquired by CGE in 2020, has emerged as one of Europe’s leading independent providers of power market analytics. Founded by a group of Oxford academics, the firm operates across 13 countries and has supported over €30bn ($34bn) in energy transactions over the past five years, according to company disclosures.

Private equity appetite for data-driven platforms remains strong, as investors seek exposure to specialist providers operating in complex and opaque markets. In a recent high-profile transaction, BlackRock acquired Preqin, a private capital intelligence provider, for £2.55bn in March.

CGE focuses on backing high-growth, tech-enabled businesses across Europe, with Aurora representing a key asset in its current portfolio.
