CIC, SFPA/FPIM and A CAPITAL set up China investment fund

China Investment Corporation (CIC), the Belgian Federal Holding and Investment Company (SFPI/FPIM) and A CAPITAL, a  private equity firm for China-Europe cross-border investments, have launched a fund to invest in leading European groups to boost their growth in China.

The first closing took place in the presence of the Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang and the Belgian Prime Minister Elio di Rupo during an official signature ceremony held at Palais d’Egmont in Brussels. CIC was represented by its Chairman Mr. Lou Jiwei, SFPI/FPIM by its CEO Koen Van Loo and A CAPITAL by its Chairman André Loesekrug-Pietri.

A CAPITAL, based both in China and in Europe, is the General Partner of the ‘A CAPITAL China Outbound Fund’. CIC and SFPI will be limited partners of the fund through the ‘China Belgium Mirror Fund’ feeder.

The fund targets performing European midcaps with revenues over EUR100 million and strong growth potential in China. It will primarily invest in leading European brands, technologies and distribution channels with the objective to create strategic partnerships building strong value for European and Chinese firms.

The Fund typically invites Chinese private and state-owned strategic co-investors in order to fully unlock the potential for growth of the companies in which it invests.

Lou Jiwei, Chairman of CIC, says: “We are very pleased to invest into this promising fund that will broaden our access to leading European firms. This commitment is consistent with CIC’s strategy to look for long-term investment opportunities in European market leaders.”

Koen Van Loo, CEO of SFPI, says: “We are delighted to participate in the first closing and are excited about the unique investment strategy of this Fund. Together with CIC and A CAPITAL, we will enable European companies to accelerate their growth in China. It is a very positive signal for our economy, confirms the strong ties between Belgium and China, and our capacity to attract Chinese investors to the center of Europe.”

André Loesekrug-Pietri, Chairman of A CAPITAL, says: “We greatly appreciate the trust and capital commitment that these two prestigious Limited Partners put in A CAPITAL. Outbound investment has become a must for many Chinese companies that need to move up the value chain. Co-investing alongside A CAPITAL within the framework of value-creating deals is a unique opportunity for many private and state-owned Chinese groups".
