Denham Capital Management, a USD2.3bn private equity fund manager focused on energy and commodities, has established a London office and hired Louis van Pletsen as managing director to run it. His responsibilities will include origination of transactions in Europe, Russia, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

‘Louis is a seasoned energy and commodities investor and we are thrilled to welcome him to the Denham team,’ says Denham Capital managing partner Stu Porter. ‘With more than 20 years of experience in the energy sector, in both developed and emerging economies, we are confident in Louis’s ability to lead the London office.

‘The London office is a first step in our plans to expand Denham’s reach, capitalising on our successful US business by developing in various international markets.’

Van Pletsen was most recently managing director for global markets and head of the international energy group at Nomura International in London, responsible for marketing structured finance, asset finance and capital markets capabilities to the broader energy and commodities sectors.

Earlier he headed continental European origination of utility transactions for a global client list at Credit Suisse First Boston. Between 1993 and 1997, Van Pletsen was head of international business development in London for South African energy utility Eskom.

He began his career in 1986 at the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa, an investment house where for seven years he was responsible for corporate investment strategy in a range of manufacturing and service sectors.

Denham makes direct investments typically ranging between USD50m and USD250m in the global energy and commodities sectors, including businesses and assets involving natural resources, metals and mining, power and utilities and energy-related infrastructure and services. The firm currently has offices in Boston, Houston and New Jersey.
