EQT and ABBA affiliated Pophouse closes inaugural fund at €1.2bn

Pophouse Entertainment, the global music and entertainment investment firm backed by ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus and EQT founder Conni Jonsson, has successfully closed its inaugural fund, Pophouse Fund I, at €1.2bn, surpassing its €1bn hard cap.

This positions the fund as one of the largest first-time private equity raises in Europe over the last decade.

Alongside the fund, more than €200m has been secured through co-investment vehicles, providing select investors with the opportunity to co-invest alongside the fund in high-impact transactions.

The fund, which is already approximately 30% deployed, has entered into landmark partnerships with high-profile music artists, including the iconic American rock band KISS, pop legend Cyndi Lauper, and Swedish EDM pioneers Avicii and Swedish House Mafia. Pophouse plans to continue acquiring music catalogues and intellectual property.

Founded by Ulvaeus and Jonsson, Pophouse is led by CEO Per Sundin, a former Managing Director of Universal Music Sweden and President of Universal Music Nordic Region. Sundin was instrumental in the music industry’s shift to streaming and signed Avicii at the start of his career.

The firm’s Chairman, Lennart Blecher, EQT’s Head of Real Assets, brings deep expertise and strategic insight, which will be vital as the firm enters this new phase following its successful fundraise.

Pophouse employs a distinctive artist-centric investment approach, focusing on the three key rights in music investment: publishing, recording, and NIL (name, image, and likeness) rights. This strategy allows the firm to consolidate control over iconic music assets, helping to enhance artist legacies and drive value creation for both artists and investors.

With the music industry undergoing significant transformation due to the rise of streaming and new technologies, Pophouse’s private equity model of acquiring and optimising music IP offers uncorrelated returns to investors, while opening new revenue streams and global audiences for its partners.

Pophouse has attracted a diversified, prestigious investor base, including leading pension funds, endowments, high-net-worth individuals, family offices, and sovereign wealth funds.
