One of the league’s most iconic teams, the Giants have enlisted Moelis & Co to manage the sale with the Mara family set to retain majority ownership and operational control of the team. John Mara, the team’s president and grandson of founder Tim Mara, continues to oversee the franchise.
The timing of the stake sale aligns with a pivotal NFL policy change in August 2024, which now allows private equity firms to purchase up to 10% stakes in teams. This policy shift has already prompted notable investments, with Arctos Partners acquiring a 10% stake in the Buffalo Bills and Ares Management purchasing a similar share of the Miami Dolphins, alongside related assets.
The Giants’ sale could represent an attractive opportunity for private equity players seeking exposure to the lucrative NFL market. As one of the league’s most valuable franchises, the team’s strong New York City market presence and rich history offer a compelling case for investors.
Recent valuations place the Giants’ worth between $7.3bn (Forbes) and $7.85bn (CNBC). By comparison, the Philadelphia Eagles recently sold an 8% stake in two separate transactions, valuing the team at $8.1bn to $8.3bn.
