John J Mahon joins Washington DC Office of Schulte Roth & Zabel

Schulte Roth & Zabel (SRZ) has added attorney John J Mahon as a partner in the Investment Management Group, resident in the firm's Washington DC office. Mahon joins SRZ from Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP.

Mahon brings to SRZ extensive experience in advising private equity firms and other financial sector participants in a wide range of capital markets and securities law matters. He has counselled on the establishment and operation of business development companies, registered closed-end funds and other similar public and private vehicles that comply with complex regulatory structures, such as the Investment Company Act of 1940, the Investment Advisers Act of 1940 and the Dodd-Frank Act. Mahon has been involved with more than 100 debt and equity offerings, including over 20 initial public offerings.

"John is an excellent addition to the firm, as he is a highly respected specialist in the areas of business development companies and closed-end registered funds, two growth areas for our clients and alternative asset managers generally," says Stephanie R Breslow (pictured), co-head of SRZ's Investment Management Group and a member of the firm's Executive Committee.

"We are delighted to have John as part of our team. He enhances our capabilities in registered alternative investment products and specialty finance, and further deepens our bench," says Steven J Fredman, co-head of the Investment Management Group.

"We are pleased to welcome John to SRZ, and we are confident he will make great contributions to the firm," says Alan S Waldenberg, chair of the firm's Executive Committee and chair of the Tax Group.

SRZ has a recognised practice and expertise representing a broad range of registered investment companies, including mutual funds and closed-end funds, as well as their advisers and distributors. The firm provides legal counsel to funds advised and sponsored by major financial institutions and independent fund groups, including broker-dealer and bank-distributed mutual funds, closed-end funds, registered hedge funds (including funds of hedge funds) and business development companies. In addition, SRZ's registered funds practice is multidisciplinary, bringing together attorneys with expertise in such areas as mergers and acquisitions, securities, derivatives, banking, tax, ERISA, bank regulatory, employment and litigation.

SRZ's preeminent investment management practice is consistently placed in the top tiers in industry rankings. Named the "Alternative/Hedge Funds Law Firm of the Year" by The Legal 500 United States Awards for 2015, SRZ is the only law firm ranked in Band 1 in both the Chambers USA and Chambers UK guides in the category of Investment Funds: Hedge Funds.

"SRZ is well-known for its roster of distinguished clients and its unparalleled investment management expertise. I am excited to work with such a talented group of lawyers," says Mahon, who also serves as an adjunct professor at The George Washington University Law School. He holds a JD from Georgetown University Law Center and a BSBA, cum laude, from the University of Richmond.
