Actis, the pan-emerging markets private equity fund, has led a consortium in the USD434m, 100% management buy-out of Tracker, South Africa’s largest vehicle tracking company. The volume and value of deals completed during the first nine months of 2011 in the lower mid-market investment space has increased year on year for the past three years, according to research from Lyceum Capital and Cass Business School. Data from The UK Growth Buyout Dashboard – a quarterly analysis of UK-headquartered private equity control deals in the GBP10 million to GBP100 million segment – shows that 63 transactions completed between 1 January 2011 and 30 September 2011. This compares to 50 investments for the same period of 2010 and just 25 during the first nine months of 2009.
Carey Olsen has been involved in an acquisition deal to buy AIM-listed company Indian Energy Limited (IEL) by Infrastructure India plc. Indian Energy is currently one of the leading independent power producers in India and operates a wind farm in Karnataka and one in the state of Tamil Nadu. Private equity firm KPS Capital Partners has acquired substantially all of the assets of United Copper Industries, an affiliate of Organizacion IUSA, S.A. de C.V. (IUSA), through a newly formed company, UCI or United Copper. Financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed. Albion Ventures has sold The Place Sandwich VCT Limited, the owner and operator of the 37-bedroom Bell Hotel in the medieval Cinque Port town of Sandwich, to Shepherd Neame Limited, Britain’s oldest brewer, for GBP3.6 million. Funds managed or advised by Albion Ventures backed the acquisition of the historic hotel in January 2005, since when a total of GBP3.1 million has been invested. Vision Capital has announced a partnership with Speyside Equity (Speyside), a Philadelphia-based private equity group, to acquire investments in its portfolio of two companies. The transaction remains subject to customary regulatory clearances. Vision Capital will acquire a majority stake in German-based United Initiators and a minority stake in US based Sweet Ovations from Speyside. Mid-market private equity firm Palamon Capital Partners is to sell portfolio company SAV Credit to Värde Partners in a transaction valued at GBP472 million. The transaction is subject to competition clearance.   Palamon has supported the development of SAV from its founding by entrepreneur Richard Langstaff in 2002 to being the UK’s leading non-standard credit card provider managing approximately 500,000 credit card accounts with more than GBP600 million in credit card assets.
