The private equity industry has a unique opportunity to accelerate the UK’s economic recovery in the coming decade and contribute to the government’s levelling up agenda, according to LDC, the UK’s leading mid-market investment firm. Speaking as LDC provided an annual summary of its performance, its newly appointed Chief Executive, Toby Rougier, said that supporting the growth ambitions of the UK’s small and mid-sized companies “in every corner of the UK” would remain its “primary purpose”.
Rougier, who joined as Chief Executive earlier this month, also re-affirmed LDC’s commitment to invest GBP1.2 billlion of equity over the next three years.
LSP, a European life sciences investor, has launched the LSP Dementia Fund, a fund dedicated to fight neurodegenerative diseases. The fund will be managed by Professor Philip Scheltens, a world-renowned dementia scientist and thought leader.
Hornetsecurity Group, a European provider of cloud-based email security and data protection headquartered in Germany, is to acquire Altaro, a high-growth international provider of reliable backup solutions. The acquisition will transform the company from being a regional leader in cloud email security to an international cloud security and compliance platform.
Altaro provides cloud back-up software for Microsoft Office 365 and virtual machine (VM) software focused on mid-market and SMEs. Headquartered in Malta with offices in the UK, Germany, France, North Macedonia and the US, Altaro serves over 50,000 customers across more than 120 countries.

Institutional investors are planning to increase allocations towards private markets in 2021, with a particular focus on small and medium-sized US private equity funds as well as venture capital, secondary and co-investment funds, according to Commonfund Capital’s fourth annual private markets investor sentiment survey.
Akin Gump has advised Swedish e-commerce investor eEquity on the launch of its fourth fund, eEquity IV, which has raised SEK1.6 billion (USD195 million). The fund will support scale-ups and high-growth SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) and small mid-caps in several EU member states, with a focus on Nordic countries.
The newly launched joint European Commission and European Investment Fund (EIF) “European Scale-up Action for Risk Capital” (ESCALAR) pilot program, backed by the Investment Plan for Europe, made its first investment, EUR37.5 million, into the fund.
