Former Lenovo Chief Financial Officer Mary Ma is to join global private equity firm TPG as Partner and Managing Director.

Ma, who joined Lenovo in 1990, served as senior vice president, executive director of the board and Chief Financial Officer before her retirement earlier this year. In 2004, Ma played a critical leadership role in Lenovo’s successful acquisition of IBM’s Personal Computing Division – the largest overseas acquisition by a Chinese company.

Ma received a BA from Capital Normal University in Beijing, continuing her studies at Kings College of the University of London. She currently serves on the board of directors of Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) and as non-executive Vice Chairman of Lenovo.

In 2005, TPG led a USD350 million private-equity investment in Lenovo to support and help finance Lenovo’s acquisition of IBM’s PC division. TPG, which has more than USD30billion in assets under management, has worked closely with Lenovo to integrate the acquisition and provide long-term strategic planning, operations and human resources support and financial expertise.

At TPG, Ma will focus on the Company’s China business and will have responsibility for generating investment opportunities, advising portfolio companies and management teams on strategic and operating issues, and building long-term relationships with Chinese business leaders.

‘I am thrilled and proud to join TPG,’ says Ma. ‘I have long appreciated the unique ability of private equity to help companies enhance their operations, efficiency and profitability, and grow to realize their full potential. I look forward to joining this firm.’

James G Coulter, Founding Partner of TPG, adds: ‘We are delighted Mary will join us. She is an experienced operator, a talented dealmaker, and she has excellent and proven experience in transactions spanning the East and West. We believe she will be an important addition to our strong Asian team.’
