International law firm Mayer Brown has been appointed by UK private equity firm Pamplona Capital Management as it seeks to buy almost one-third of Lloyd’s of London insurer Chaucer Holdings.

Chaucer is a specialist insurance and reinsurance underwriting group which underwrites insurance business at Lloyd’s, the insurance and reinsurance market.

Pamplona increased its stake in Chaucer to 9.99 per cent after buying 9.26 per cent of the company’s shares at 44p last week and is looking to buy up to 29.9 per cent of Chaucer in cash. It has entered into an agreement to increase its stake by 6.28 per cent to 16.27 per cent.

William Charnley, corporate partner at Mayer Brown, says: ‘We are delighted to be representing Pamplona as they take this strategic step into the financial sector.’

Paul Thompson, partner at Pamplona, adds: ‘Mayer Brown’s knowledge of the insurance and reinsurance market is second to none. This knowledge, coupled with their strong private equity practice is proving to be invaluable as we look to increase our stake in Chaucer.’
