Far fewer active fund managers outperformed their benchmarks in 2018, according to an analysis of 15 key equity and bond fund segments by Scope. In fact, under a quarter of active equity funds beat benchmarks in 2018 and just 16 per cent of bond funds outperformed.
Scope’s study, which covered nearly 2,000 equity funds (UCITS) authorised for distributing in Germany, found that the proportion that outperformed their benchmark fell year-over-year by over half from 53 per cent in 2017 to 24 per cent last year. All eight equity segments saw their ratios worsen from 2017 to 2018.

MJ Hudson has advised NextEnergy Capital on the first closing of NextPower III LP (NP III), a solar energy fund, with initial commitments of circa USD160 million.

According to new research from Intertrust, private equity firms are acutely aware of the impact digital innovation will have on their sector, particularly in the areas of artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain.
Over 90 per cent believe AI is likely to have the biggest transformational impact on the sector. This is almost a fifth higher than the industry average of 77 per cent. Over a third (37 per cent) of respondents to the survey said that blockchain, AI and robotics are already being adopted in the industry and will become more widespread in the near future.
