DFJ Mercury, a seed and early-stage venture capital firm investing in IT, advanced materials, and bioscience companies, had closed DFJ Mercury Fund II with USD70m in total commitments.  As part of Fund II, several new institutional investors joined the support already provided by DFJ Mercury Fund I’s high-net-worth and family office investors. Cosmo founder to leave firm Cosmo Investment Management, the South Korean arm of SPARX Group Co., Ltd., has confirmed that its founder, Kevin Choi, is to leave the firm. Choi has carved out a reputation as a leading Korea equity long/short specialist, turning Cosmo into one of South Korea’s largest independent advisory firms. Choi was unavailable to comment. RoundTable Healthcare Partners, a private equity firm focused exclusively on the healthcare industry, has made a controlling investment in Aqua Pharmaceuticals. Founded in 2004, Aqua is a dermatology pharmaceutical company focused on acquiring, developing and marketing under-promoted, branded, pharmaceutical products in the US. Law firm Kaye Scholer has appointed Andrew B. Harris, a private equity, M&A and corporate finance lawyer, as managing partner of its London office. Investor demands for more clearly-defined, transparent and lower-risk products combined with regulators’ desire to exercise more control over the industry may result in the unwanted consequences of lower returns and constraint on innovation. Energy price risk management company Encore International has been sold for GBP6.25m to McKinnon & Clarke, an energy procurement and compliance specialist headquartered in Edinburgh. McKinnon & Clarke is a portfolio company of private equity business Lyceum Capital. The enlarged business will be re-named M&C Energy Group on 1 July.
