Plural and Iconical co-lead $90m funding round for Starship Technologies

UK-based VCs Plural Platform and Iconical have co-led a $90m funding round for Starship Technologies, an autonomous robot last-mile delivery company founded by Skype Co-Founders Janus Friis and Ahti Heinla.

According to a press release, the funding will go towards expanding Starship’s autonomous robot delivery operations worldwide and capitalising on a growing demand for seamless home deliveries.

Prior to this funding round, Starship had raised $160m since its founding in 2014. The company’s robots operate in six markets worldwide: the US, the UK, Germany, Denmark, Estonia and Finland. Bolt, Co-op, Aramark, Sodexo, Chartwells and Grubhub are some of the companies using Starship’s robots.

Plural was founded in 2021 by Ian Hogarth, Co-Founder of Songkick; Taavet Hinrikus, Co-Founder of fintech Wise; Sten Tamkivi, Co-Founder of “Stripe for NFTs” NFTPort; and Khaled Helioui, former CEO of game developer Bigpoint. Plural’s investment in Starship follows the launch of its €400m ($435m) fund last month, which focuses on the technology and AI sector. Other recent investments include AI-powered contract software company Robin AI and Proxima Fusion, a German startup developing clean energy solutions from nuclear fusion.

Iconical was founded in 2014 and focuses on “breakthrough technology startups” according to its website, having previously invested in communication app Wire, wine marketplace app Vivino and medical device company Spirosure.
