Global law firm Reed Smith has appointed Tom Whelan as a Partner focusing on private equity in its London office. Whelan joined the firm’s global corporate group from McDermott Will & Emery (MWE), where he was also a Partner.
Whelan, who led the private equity and corporate transactions group at MWE, has previously advised private equity sponsors, multi strategy funds, private capital investors and corporates on various types of transactions including buyouts, co-investments, mergers and acquisitions, restructurings, refinancings, and exits as well as advising on management incentive plans.
Whelan’s career began at Ashurst in 1991, where he trained and worked as an Associate, before joining DLA Piper as a Partner in 2002. Whelan then moved to Hogan Lovells as partner in 2006, where he was promoted to global head of private equity in 2012, prior to joining MWE in 2019.
