The Riverside Company, a private equity firm focused on the smaller end of the middle market, has marked its 20th anniversary year with a record acquisition pace and continued growth and expansion across Europe.

This year to date, the firm has closed 11 acquisitions in key European markets – up from three in 2007.

The firm has also completed two exits, and has celebrated office openings in Brussels and Stockholm.

Tony Cabral, Riverside’s managing partner for Europe, says: ‘Our 20th anniversary is a significant milestone for Riverside, and 2008 has been a banner year for the firm. We’ve had a record-setting year for acquisitions and have strengthened our infrastructure in Europe with continued expansion.

‘Riverside’s proven strategy of buying and building leading companies, partnering with management and maintaining solid financial relationships has allowed us to weather many financial cycles. Having proven our strength and durability during the past 20 years, we’ve come a long way in establishing ourselves as one of the premier middle-market investors, and we’re eager to see what the coming decades will bring.’

Since it was established in 1988, Riverside has invested in 208 transactions in the US, Europe and Asia combined.

So far this year, the firm has invested in 32 transactions across these markets.

Riverside has grown its assets under management to approximately EUR2bn and has 180 professionals in 18 offices around the world.

In Europe, the firm has invested in a total of 35 companies, including 11 this year, and has employees in eight European offices, including Brussels, Budapest, Eindhoven, Madrid, Munich, Prague, Stockholm and Warsaw.

Riverside’s European acquisitions to date in 2008 include: Sage Holdings’ acquisition of financial communications firm M:Communications; Swiss-based EM Test Group, a global provider of electromagnetic compatibility test generators; Summit Medical, a UK-based medical supplies company; and AICAT, a German-based digital engineering company as an add-on to IndustrieHansa.

The firm’s 2008 exits include the exit of German engineering company, IndustrieHansa and the realization of German pump and valve firm, Richter Chemie-Technik.
