Sidley Austin has appointed Vijay S Sekhon (pictured) as a partner in Century City. He will be a member of the firm’s M&A and Private Equity practices and will focus on handling transactions for public and private companies, and private equity firms.
Sekhon joins a rapidly growing team of lawyers in Century City, as Sidley continues to focus on strategic growth in Los Angeles.
“Vijay is an exceptionally talented corporate lawyer who combines high intellect and high energy,” says Dan Clivner, co-managing partner of Sidley’s Los Angeles offices. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with Vijay on high-profile transactions and look forward to collaborating with him again. He is a valuable addition to our growing team in Century City and proof positive of Sidley’s commitment to enhancing the depth of our M&A and private equity capabilities here in Century City.”
Sekhon is the sixth partner to join Sidley in Southern California this year as Sidley intensifies its commitment to growth in Los Angeles. Mr. Sekhon’s arrival follows that of Clay Friedman and Joel Rothstein in Los Angeles and Chad Hummel, Matt Thompson and Dan Clivner in Century City.
At his previous firm, Sekhon served as the head of its corporate practice. He concentrates his practice on representing private equity firms and their portfolio companies in acquisitions, dispositions, mergers and restructurings. He also focuses on public equity offerings, public debt issuances, private placements of debt and equity for public and private companies, and general corporate and securities law. Sekhon has represented major global investment firms and clients in a variety of industries, including finance, real estate, food service, telecommunications and media and entertainment.
“Vijay’s extensive experience handling a wide variety of private equity matters for a number of sophisticated private equity firms enhances the broad spectrum of services we offer private equity clients,” says Chris Abbinante, co-leader of Sidley’s Private Equity practice. “Vijay brings a high level of private equity and M&A knowledge and skill to our global team of private equity lawyers.”
Earlier in his career, Sekhon served as senior counsel in the Office of the General Counsel of the US Securities and Exchange Commission. He also held a judicial internship with former Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist in the United States Supreme Court. Sekhon has published extensively on private equity and mergers and acquisitions in several respected academic and practitioner journals, such as the Stanford Journal of Law, Business & Finance, the Berkeley Business Law Journal, Pratt’s Journal of Bankruptcy Law and the Securities Regulation Law Journal. Sekhon currently serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law, where he has taught Business Organizations and Business for Lawyers classes.
