The volume of venture capital and private equity investment in Spain hit a new record high of €9.24 billion across 958 investments in 2022, according to the latest data from SpainCap, with international funds making a record €7.406 million of investments.
Domestic private funds meanwhile, made €1.685 million of investments across 592 investments, while domestic public funds provided €147 million in 144 investments.
Over the course of the year, 15 megadeals (more than €100m) were closed, while mid-market transactions (€10m-€100m) accounted for 33% of the total volume invested, with 114 investments made in 2022.
Divestment (at cost) amounted to €1,95bn in 437 divestments, while new resources raised by domestic private entities reached a volume of €2.62bn in 2022.
During the first quarter of 2023, PE and VC investors made €2.17 billion of investments in 219 deals (179 VC and 40 PE. A total of 23 deal were closed in the mid-market sector over the quarter.
Speaking at SpainCap’s annual congress, president Oriol Pinya, said: “After an exceptional 2022, the first quarter of this year continues to be active in the private equity space, both in terms of volume and number of deals, with a very dynamic mid-market. Despite the current environment marked by macroeconomic uncertainty, our industry continues to undertake deals and there is sufficient liquidity to continue to drive SMEs and startups. We are a long-term investor and, as the title of this year’s Congress indicates, our main objective is also to promote sustainability in the companies in which we invest”.
