US tech-focussed private investment firm Stone Point Capital has entered exclusive discussions to acquire UK wealth manager Amber River, as private equity firms continue to target the fast-growing wealth management sector, according to a report by Financial News London.
The Connecticut-based buyout firm is understood to be leading the process following board-level discussions at Amber River in December, according to people familiar with the matter. A number of private equity groups had previously explored an investment, including Bain Capital and TowerBrook, though the field is now believed to have narrowed.
While Stone Point is currently viewed as the preferred bidder, sources cautioned that a transaction has yet to be finalised.
Amber River, which is owned by Penta Capital, oversees approximately £15bn in assets under management. A sale would represent another significant transaction in a UK wealth market that has attracted sustained private equity interest in recent years.
The sector has become a key focus for buyout firms seeking predictable, recurring revenue streams, with consolidator platforms deploying billions of pounds of debt to acquire smaller advisory businesses. Industry participants point to favourable demographic trends – including rising longevity, increasing personal wealth and a major intergenerational transfer of assets – as structural tailwinds supporting long-term growth.
At the same time, growing tax and regulatory complexity in the UK has reinforced demand for professional financial advice, enabling wealth managers to command annual fees of around 1% of client assets.
