Global law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges has announced the election to partnership of Kevin Ban and Anthony Wang, both attorneys in the firm’s Shanghai office who focus on cross-border private equity and merger and acquisition transactions and are fluent Mandarin speakers.

Ban has been practicing in greater China for many years, while Wang, who assisted with the opening of the Shanghai office, moved there from Weil Gotshal’s Silicon Valley office in 2007.

The election of Ban and Wang to the partnership reflects the continuing expansion in Asia for Weil Gotshal, which opened in Shanghai in 2004 and in Hong Kong last year, and expects to open a Beijing office later this year. The firm has more than 20 lawyers in Asia and focuses on both inbound and outbound deals for private equity firms and multinational corporates.

‘Asia is an important and integral part of Weil Gotshal’s global platform,’ says chairman Stephen J. Dannhauser. ‘The election of Kevin Ban and Tony Wang to the partnership is further evidence of our commitment to the region and our goal to offer clients incisive, best-in-class legal advice from seasoned international attorneys.’

Akiko Mikumo, the firm’s Hong Kong-based managing partner for Asia, says: ‘Our private equity and multinational corporate clients are very focused on Asia and they require sophisticated, experienced legal counsel who can protect their interests while at the same time helping them realize their commercial objectives.’

Steve Xiang, the head of the Shanghai office, adds: ‘We have done some of the most cutting-edge private equity and M&A transactions in China in recent years, and this requires bilingual practitioners who are experienced and trained international deal lawyers. Kevin Ban and Tony Wang are among the best young US-trained deal lawyers in this market.’

Weil, Gotshal & Manges is a global law firm of 1,300 lawyers, including around 300 partners, with headquarters in New York and offices in Austin, Boston, Budapest, Dallas, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Houston, London, Miami, Munich, Paris, Prague, Providence, Shanghai, Silicon Valley, Warsaw, Washington DC and Wilmington.
