Wrexham owners sell minority stake to US PE firm Apollo Sports Capital

Wrexham Association Football Club’s celebrity owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have sold a minority stake in the Welsh football club to Apollo Sports Capital, a US-based private equity firm, according to an Associated Press report.

Financial terms of the transaction, which is aimed at supporting the club’s growth and stadium redevelopment, have not been disclosed.

The investment will contribute to the redevelopment of Wrexham’s stadium and surrounding areas, aligning with Apollo’s strategy of acquiring stakes in sports franchises with strong growth potential. Reynolds and McElhenney, who purchased the club in 2021 and elevated its profile globally through a documentary series, described the deal as part of building a “sustainable future” while remaining connected to the local community.

Wrexham has risen rapidly through the English football league system, earning three consecutive promotions to reach the Championship, the second tier, for the 2025-26 season — the club’s highest level since 1982. Apollo, which recently acquired a majority stake in Atletico Madrid, brings experience in scaling professional sports investments internationally.
