Nordic Alpha Partners has acquired the assets and patents of Danish cleantech company MicroShade, backing its mission to tackle one of the construction sector’s largest challenges – balancing solar heat gain, daylight access, and energy efficiency.
MicroShade’s patented glass-integrated solar shading solution embeds a 3D micro-structured film directly into window glazing, filtering out direct solar irradiation while maintaining natural light and clear views. The technology eliminates the need for traditional shading systems such as louvres or blinds, reducing dependence on energy-intensive cooling and enabling simpler, more sustainable building designs.

Buildings account for over 30% of energy-related emissions in the EU, with heating and cooling responsible for around a quarter of global CO₂ emissions. By diverting heat while preserving daylight, MicroShade’s polymer-based structure offers what Nordic Alpha describes as a five-fold improvement in light-to-energy efficiency compared with alternatives.
The company’s first- and second-generation products have already been installed in hundreds of buildings across 13 countries, including Copenhagen Towers (Foster + Partners), Nordea’s Nordic headquarters (Henning Larsen), Lapp GmbH’s Stuttgart HQ, and the German Architecture Museum in Frankfurt.
With more than 10 billion square metres of flat glass produced annually worldwide, Nordic Alpha Partners sees significant potential for MicroShade to become the industry standard for sustainable façade design.
