Apollo takes majority stake in Atletico Madrid

Apollo Global Management’s sports investment arm, Apollo Sports Capital, has agreed to acquire a roughly 55% stake in Spain’s Atletico Madrid, valuing the La Liga club at approximately €2.5bn ($2.9bn), according to a report by Reuters.

The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026 and follows a share-sale process involving major stakeholders including CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin, President Enrique Cerezo, and possibly Ares Management, all of whom will retain minority holdings.

Private equity firms are playing an increasing role in sports, due to the consistent revenue that the sector offers. A&O Shearman acted as legal counsel to Apollo Sports Capital. ECIJA acted as legal counsel to Gil Marin and Cerezo.
