Wellspring has raised USD5m in capital led by MK Capital, a USD250m venture capital firm focused on building companies in the software and digital media industries.
The capital will be used to strengthen Wellspring's product and technology position within the R&D and product innovation markets and for expansion in the corporate R&D, clinical, and academic research markets.
The Chicago-based Open Innovation software company was founded in 2003 as a spin-out of Carnegie Mellon University, initially providing technology transfer software solutions to universities and hospitals. Brokers are optimistic about merger and acquisition activity in 2014 with 87 per cent projecting an increase in completed deals and the majority of advisors anticipating that overall deal volume will increase.
That is according to the Fourth Quarter 2013 Market Pulse Quarterly Survey Report published by the Pepperdine Private Capital Market Project, International Business Broker Association (IBBA) and M&A Source.

Following a disappointing year in 2013 there are increasing signs that the German private equity market could see a significant upturn in the months ahead.
Relevant indicators include good business prospects, moderate company valuations and a significant improvement in the options for using capital leverage.
Those are the key findings of the latest private equity panel survey, which is conducted three times a year by CMS Hasche Sigle and FINANCE magazine. Some 40 private equity (PE) firms provide anonymous assessments of the market for the survey.

National private equity firm Lariat Partners has formed Ecoserv, an integrated environmental cleaning and waste disposal provider, by merging Newpark Environmental Services with Offshore Cleaning Systems (OCS).
Kenny DesOrmeaux, founder and CEO of Los Angeles-based OCS, will become CEO of Ecoserv, which will be headquartered in Lafayette, LA and operate out of 14 locations throughout the Gulf Coast and Permian Basin of West Texas.

International group BOS has acquired automotive supplier etm (engineering technologie marketing GmbH).
Subject to approval from the competition authorities, the Schönbrunn site and employees will become part of BOS, which currently has 17 facilities worldwide.
Going forward, etm will continue to be managed and developed as an independent firm. The purchase price was not disclosed.

Established in 2007, SOC is a provider of specialty physician services that provides on-call coverage to suburban and urban acute-care hospitals via videoconferencing, a USD3bn addressable market.
The company delivers teleconsultations by its physicians that improve patient care and increase the financial and clinical strength of community hospitals.

Hy-Bon Engineering Company, a portfolio company of Pfingsten Partners, has been acquired by Regal Beloit Corporation (RBC).
Baird acted as the exclusive financial advisor to Hy-Bon on the transaction. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

UK online contact lens retailer GetLenses.co.uk has acquired Dutch online retailers Vision Direct and Lensbase, which sell contact lenses and prescription glasses to consumers in the Netherlands, Spain and the UK.
The acquisition was financed by a new funding round led by existing shareholder Octopus Investments and included Fidelity Worldwide Investments, Hargreave Hale and Artemis Investment Management.
The combined entity is expected to generate revenues of over EUR30m in 2014.

Albion Community Power (ACP) has invested GBP1.5m in partnership with Welsh developer Infinite Renewables to fund the development of a 500kw single wind turbine in Blaencilgoed, in South Wales.
The wind turbine, which is the first investment made by ACP, will supply electricity to a local quarry. It is expected to produce its first power in September and is predicted to generate over 1,700,000 kWh of electricity per year.
