The Economist Group has announces that its chief executive Helen Alexander is to step down at the group’s annual general meeting on July 15 to join private equity firm Bain Capital as an adviser.

Alexander joined The Economist as marketing manager in 1985, then ran international circulation before becoming managing director of the Economist Intelligence Unit till 1997, when she became chief executive.

Over the past five years, the group says, its operating profit of has increased by 75 per cent and the circulation of The Economist has increased by nearly 50 per cent to 1,306,939 today.

In addition to becoming an adviser to Bain Capital, Alexander will continue as a non-executive director of Centrica and Rolls-Royce Group. She was previously a non-executive director of Northern Foods and BT Group.
