After separating from its former parent company, Pinegrove Venture Partners found itself at a crossroads. The firm – a venture investment platform with over $10 billion in assets under management – needed to build a fully independent and scalable infrastructure to support its growing venture debt portfolio. But its existing mix of Excel spreadsheets, legacy systems, and costly third-party servicing tools couldn’t keep up with the pace.
“The cost of keeping things as-is was greater than the cost of making a transition to a new system,” said Christopher Kong, Director of Operations at Pinegrove.
Kong, a commercial banking veteran, was familiar with the loan systems widely used across the industry – but he also knew their limits. “’Industry standard’ products are standard because everyone is using them, not because they meet every need,” he explained.
The firm’s servicing and reporting workflows were highly manual and error-prone. Internal teams found themselves bogged down by inefficient processes that left little room for the kind of precision and professionalism they needed to scale confidently. It was clear a change was necessary—not just to cut costs, but to support Pinegrove’s long-term growth ambitions.
Getting hands-on with Hypercore
In evaluating potential solutions, the Pinegrove team was looking for more than a slick demo. They needed hands-on access to test a system’s real-world capabilities before committing – a rarity in the loan management space.
“With other loan management platforms, you’re paying for a Rolls Royce but you never get to test drive it,” Kong shared. “With Hypercore, I could fully test the system during the sales process and get hands-on with example deals and amortization schedules, which helped me make my purchase decision.”
Hypercore’s approach stood out. Not only did the team allow for full testing, but their deep familiarity with the venture debt landscape made it easy to map the platform to Pinegrove’s unique needs.
Unlike rigid legacy systems, Hypercore offered a customizable, intuitive platform that enabled Pinegrove to consolidate servicing and operations in one place. This centralization brought automation, reduced errors, and elevated the professional polish of borrower-facing materials. The implementation wasn’t just a technical success – it helped win over stakeholders.
“They recognized our current processes couldn’t sustain our growth projection,” said Kong. “So when we presented Hypercore to the operating committee, it was an obvious choice.”
Results that exceeded expectations
The results were immediate, and implementation moved faster than expected—meeting every one of Pinegrove’s criteria.
“I already thought highly of Hypercore and the team,” Kong noted, “but the seamless, successful implementation process—it was surprisingly fast—was truly impressive.”
With Hypercore in place, Pinegrove quickly consolidated its loan operations, automated complex reporting workflows, and eliminated the need for manual invoicing and Excel tracking. The transition not only reduced error rates but also improved collaboration across teams. Both the operations and finance departments now rely on a single, unified system – streamlining cross-functional workflows and improving visibility into the portfolio.
Perhaps most notably, Hypercore allowed Pinegrove to bring servicing fully in-house, replacing the costly third-party fund administration services they had previously depended on. The result: annual savings of up to $500,000, all while scaling the business without adding headcount.
