Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) and Venture Capital Trust (VCT) specialist Calculus Capital has made a second-round investment of GBP2 million in Origin Broadband (Origin) to support growth.
Origin is an award-winning provider of internet and phone services. Since Calculus Capital’s first investment in the business in December 2016, Origin has been extremely successful in acquiring new residential customers, surpassing its projected numbers by more than 300 per cent. To help meet the exceptional level of demand for its products and services the company has increased its headcount by over 100 per cent since December.
Calculus Capital’s new round of
Global Infrastructure Partners’ (GIP) Global Infrastructure Partners III (GIP III) fund is to acquire a 50 per cent stake in the Borkum Riffgrund 2 Offshore Wind Farm project from DONG Energy for a total consideration of approximately EUR 1,170 million.
Borkum Riffgrund 2 is a 450MW offshore wind project in the German North Sea, currently being constructed by DONG Energy. DONG Energy will provide a full-scope EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contract for the construction of the project. In addition, DONG Energy will provide operation and maintenance services and a route to market for the power production.

DeepCrawl, a web crawler and search marketing analytics and insights company, has secured GBP1.75 million in a Series A funding round led by growth investor Beringea.
Beringea is investing GBP1.5 million, with the remaining funding provided by existing individual high net worth investors.

CapitalSpring, an investment firm focused on the branded restaurant industry, has held the final closing of CapitalSpring Investment Partners V, and parallel funds (Fund V), with USD725 million of aggregate capital commitments.
Fund V, which was substantially oversubscribed and exceeded its target of USD500 million, attracted strong backing from a diverse group of existing and new limited partners in the US and Europe, including public and private pensions, endowments, foundations, funds of funds, and family offices.

Darkstore, a third-party logistics (3PL) company based in San Francisco, has secured USD1.4 million in seed funding from PivotNorth Capital, a venture capital firm known for investing in promising software enterprises.
Darkstore Founder and CEO Lee Hnetinka, who already raised USD150,000 in May of last year and another USD120,000 in August 2016, plans to use this latest round of funding to expand Darkstore’s growing reach in order to provide speedy order fulfilment services for a growing number of business partners across the nation.

Kettle safety controls manufacturer and supplier Strix Group has completed a GBP190m equity fundraising and listing on London’s Alternative Investment Market (AIM), in a deal led by independent investment bank Zeus Capital.
Established in 1982, the Isle of Man-based Strix is a global leader in the design, manufacture and supply of kettle safety controls and other water temperature management components. The company has built up market leading capabilities, with an estimated 174 million kettles sold worldwide in 2016 – a 38 per cent global market share.

The combined company will offer the industry’s most complete Enterprise Agile, ALM Collaboration, Version Control and DevOps solutions that power application development and delivery for many of the world’s leading businesses and government institutions.

Post Oak Energy Capital (Post Oak), through investment partnerships it manages, has led a USD100 million equity commitment to Nadel and Gussman NV. Affiliates of Nadel and Gussman, LLC and the management team will co-invest alongside Post Oak.

British men’s shaving supplier Cornerstone has completed a new GBP3.5m round of investment led by private equity firm Calculus Capital, with e-commerce veteran William Reeve (previously on the boards of Graze, Lovefilm, Zoopla & Paddy Power) joining Cornerstone as adviser.
This latest funding round takes total capital raised since launch in 2014 to GBP8 million. Previous investors include Quidco CEO Andy Oldham, ex-Jack Wills Chairman Will Hobhouse, Charles Tyrwhitt Chairman Nick Wheeler and ex-President of Levi Jeans Joe Middleton.
