British Patient Capital, a subsidiary of the British Business Bank, has committed USD45 million to Balderton Capital Fund VII, as it closes at USD400 million.
The fund will focus on the Series A stage to support outstanding founders at this critical point in a start-up’s journey.
As with previous funds, Balderton will be looking to invest in leading-edge technologies, as well as strong brands with demonstrable momentum. Asian private equity firm NewQuest Partners has held the final close of its fourth dedicated secondary fund, NewQuest Asia Fund IV with over USD1 billion in total commitments, surpassing its initial target of USD850 million.
The Fund increased its original hard cap of USD950 million to accommodate strong investor demand.
Fund IV investors include a diverse group of endowment funds, pension funds, sovereign funds, insurers, financial institutions and family offices across Asia, North America, Europe and the Middle East. Fund IV’s close comes on the back of NewQuest’s prior fund, NewQuest Asia Fund III, being fully deployed.

HDFH has formally launched the Global Digital Bank Consortium Blockchain Investment Fund at the 2nd China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai.
Initiated by HDFH, Yillion Bank and Zhongguancun Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (ZVCA) in collaboration with domestic and international investors, the new fund will invest in digital banks and proven fintech infrastructure platforms worldwide, as well as integrate the capabilities of the three parties’ management teams to facilitate the upgrading of investment targets, ultimately maximising value in the capital markets.

Harveys and Bensons for Beds, which have been owned by Steinhoff since 2005, trade from 269 stores. The Group, which also has four manufacturing sites, as well as five distribution centres in the UK, employs more than 2,700 people and has an annual turnover of over GBP500 million.

Mid-market private equity firm, Equistone Partners Europe (Equistone) is to acquire Brussels-based, Amadys, a provider of passive network equipment solutions to utility segments in Belgium and its surrounding countries, from the existing management team and Vectis Private Equity.
The management team, led by CEO Hein Wilderjans, will continue to run the company following the acquisition and retain a sizeable minority share in the business. Financial terms of the transaction, which is expected to complete in early 2020, have not been disclosed and the acquisition remains subject to clearance from the relevant competition authorities.

The VCT season continues to pick up steam, with Maven announcing its intention to raise GBP15 million across two of its VCTs. It follows on from recent high profile launches from Albion, Mobeus and Octopus Titan.
Demand for VCTs has been strong this tax year. So far GBP31 million has been invested through the Wealth Club platform compared with GBP21 million over the same period last year.
This comes despite many people sitting on their hands as a result of election and Brexit uncertainty and the fact that many popular VCTs have opened later this year than last.
