Private equity firms have charged hidden fees amounting to USD20 billion to companies, while some of the firm’s partners have sat on the company’s board of directors, according to a new study.
Dr Ludovic Phalippou, Associate Professor of Finance, Saïd Business School and his co-authors Dr Christian Rauch and Professor Dr Mark Umber examined the portfolio fees of 592 US companies worth USD1.1 trillion in total. In a new paper “Private Equity Portfolio Company Fees” they reveal that these companies paid a total of USD20 billion to private equity firms over the last twenty years.

Blackstone has held the final close os its latest global private equity fund, Blackstone Capital Partners VII (BCP VII) at USD18 billion.
Fundraising began in November 2014 and the fund had a record USD15.7 billion first close in May, seven months after launching. There are more than 250 limited partners from 40 countries in the fund. Demand for the fund was significantly in excess of its hard cap of USD17.5 billion. MUFG Investor Services has secured all regulatory approvals for its acquisition of UBS Asset Management’s Alternative Fund Services (AFS) business and the acquisition has closed.
The deal forms part of MUFG Investor Services’ strategy to build a global industry-leading fund administrator. The AFS acquisition raises MUFG Investor Services’ total assets under administration to USD266 billion across 2,300 funds.
